Derma Pen / Micro-Needling

Derma Pen is an advanced technology that helps to tighten, rejuvenate and lift the skin. The procedure makes use of a micro-needling device that has an automated needling motion. The needling motion of the Derma Pen helps to ensure that topical serums, like hyaluronic acid, and peptides to penetrate the skin to give it a youthful appearance. Derma Pen also helps to even out the tone and texture of the skin. The down time after the procedure is minimal and within a day the person is back to his or her regular routine. Derma Pen is highly effective in reducing the appearance of Fine Lines, Pore-Size, Wrinkles , Minimizing Acne Scars, Lip Wrinkles, Skin Discoloration, and Melasma.

The Derma Pen / Micro Needling Therapy delivery provides unparalleled via fractional delivery of needles micro injuries into the epidermis and dermis. These micro injuries to the skin encourage and harness the power of the body’s innate ability to re-grow and repair the skin through the normal physiology of skin. The first phase begins with the release of your bodies growth factors and the further cascade of new epidermal growth, fibroblast chemo-taxis, fibroblast proliferation and matrix production. This proliferation of the body’s tissue continues to release growth factors from fibroblasts, keratinocytes and monocytes. The second phase of wound healing involves deposition of collagen III, IV and I, elastin, proteoglycans, and GAG’s. The last phase results in tissue remodeling where the skins vascular matrix matures and skin tightening as well as new collagen can be seen. The body’s NATURAL ability to remodel and heal itself is at the heart of this amazing process.

Micro Needling and Melasma

Melasma is a common skin pigment disorder of women between the ages of 20 and 50. Causes of melasma include sun, ultraviolet exposure, pregnancy, oral contraceptives, and certain drugs.

Clinically, melasma is characterized by irregularly shaped hyperpigmented areas of a beige or brown color. These areas usually occur on areas of the face exposed to sun, for example, the upper lip, cheeks, and forehead.

Therapy for melasma consist of topical application of hypopigmenting agents. These agents include hydroquinone, retinoic acid and azelaic acid. Laser resurfacing has been used in the past, but side effects include persistent erythema, hypo / hyper pigmentation,
and hypertrophic scarring. Dermal needling (or fractional dermabrasion) when used with topical depigmenting serum has been shown to significantly improve appearance

1. How does Micro Needling work?

The premise is simple – The Micro Needling creates micro point punctures in the skin- the majority of which are simply pushing your open pores temporarily. This is perceived by the body as damage, which stimulates the release of growth factors that trigger the production of collagen and elastin. Your skin reacts to any injury by initiating the healing process. Your skin normally assumes that scars, stretch marks and wrinkles are repaired, but with the Derma Pen micro needling treatments, the skin is tricked into repairing the skin evenly. The process of micro needling skin remodeling can go on for months after each Derma Pen treatment. Results can be seen within a week or even a few days. Your skin naturally heals itself within 45 days, so with a little micro needling stimulation, dramatic changes can be seen very quickly. Micro Needling works best when done in a series of treatments.

Full-face treatments take about an hour. After your face is numbed, the sterile single-use micro-needle is applied to the face, leaving behind tiny pinholes which trigger a cascade of reactions which stimulate regenerative healing. You can expect redness following treatment which will resolve within a few days. During the healing process, skin cells release growth signals to stem cells. New fibroblasts rush in. New collagen fibers thicken the skin, filling in depressed scars, forming a new, healthy collagen layer (collagenesis) in the treated area. The healing process also generates growth of endothelial cells (the thin layer of cells which line capillaries and blood vessels). In turn, this creates new capillaries (angiogenesis) for better blood supply to the skin.

Your skin naturally heals itself within 45 days, so with a little micro needling stimulation, dramatic changes can be seen very quickly. (Treatments can be done once monthly)

2. What can the Micro Needling be used for?

Micro Needling can quickly treat specific skin areas – large or small – to achieve a number of goals.

• Lip wrinkles  (Incredible for Former Smokers)

• Skin Texture / Tone

• Pore appearance

• Increase product absorption

• Skin Tightening

• Surgical Scarring

• Facial wrinkles

• Crows Feet

• Skin texure on the neck

• Acne Scarring / Trauma Scarring

• Stretch Marks

• Melasma and Pigmentation

Treatment on the face is the primary location, but skin needling can successfully be used on any area of the body.

 3. How deep does the Micro Needling Therapy go?

From very superficial penetration to deep dermal penetration, the professional applications have a wide range of potential to improve and correct skin problems without the use of lasers. Penetration ranges begin at cosmetic depth of 0.25mm up to 2.0mm.

•Light penetration opens the skin long enough for the introduction of specific treatment serums. Since most product molecules are too large to cross the skin barrier, they can only be minimally effective. Micro Needling opens the skin for a few minutes and this allows a huge increase of product penetration – your product ingredients can then reach beneath the surface where they will do the most good. Treatment serums can be selected for skin lightening, hydration, texture and pore tightening.

• Mid penetration depths can have a very positive impact on superficial sun damage and light scarring to improve skin texture and tone and a visible improvement in pore size appearance.

• Deeper levels of penetration can improve acne scars, burn scars, stretch marks and tighten skin and soften wrinkles.

• Micro-Needling reduces the risk of post treatment pigmentation that is more prevalent with laser heat for ethnic skin (Patients will still need to use sun protection and avoid heat exposure while in the recovery phase.

4. Is skin needling painful?

Superficial treatment levels are very tolerable with nothing more than topical numbing gel (the lightest application requires no numbing at all) applied prior to the treatment.

Day 1: Erythema and red appearance and severity will depend upon how aggressive the treatment was performed.

Day 2: A red hue or pink hue persists like a moderate sunburn. Swelling may be more noticeable on the second day.

Day 3: Skin can be pink or normal color. Swelling subsides
